Born in Tuscaloosa, AL in 1935, DeVon Cunningham began his art training at the tender age of eleven when he won a scholarship to the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis, Indiana. His artistic ability was soon recognized and a benefactor sent him to Italy to study art with the great artist, Petrini.
DeVon eventually settled in Detroit. He continued his art training at the Detroit Center for Creative Studies, then pursued a bachelor's degree from the Detroit Institute of Technology and a master's degree from Wayne State University.
His work hangs in many private and public art collections and a collection of his work is digitally archived, most notably in the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute.
DeVon Cunningham continued pursuing his passions for painting and
social activism up until his passing in 2023.
